Art On Your Doorstep brought 30 life-size reproductions of paintings from the National Gallery collection to parks, venues and public spaces across Croydon.
As the second destination in the National Gallery’s nationwide programme, the project invited residents to encounter works selected in collaboration with local community groups, creating a trail across nine locations throughout the borough.
Working with Culture Croydon, we developed the visual identity and interpretation design for the programme. The challenge was to create a clear and recognisable system that could unite artworks from different periods and styles while connecting locations spread across Croydon. As the paintings themselves needed to remain the focus, any graphic intervention had to support rather than compete with the artworks.
The final design centred on a simplified outline of the London Borough of Croydon, rendered with a painterly quality that referenced both the act of painting and the geographical reach of the project. Used throughout in a distinctive mint green, the graphic device provided a consistent visual thread across maps, interpretation panels and visitor materials, helping audiences navigate the trail while reinforcing the idea of a single exhibition extending across multiple neighbourhoods.
The identity was applied across a range of outputs, including printed trail maps, interpretation panels and a 12-metre long street hoarding introducing the programme. Together, these elements created a coherent experience across multiple venues and public spaces, supporting the National Gallery’s ambition to bring art beyond the gallery walls and into communities across the country.
